Volkswagen will be holding a press conference ahead of the 2016 Auto Expo in New Delhi, on February 2. Since the new compact sedan is the most important product in Volkswagen’s expo plans, we suspect the car will debut on the said date.
The compact sedan has been caught testing a few times recently and is basically the Polo with some alterations and a small boot. Reports claim that the new car will be named Ameo. In terms of design, it is similar to the Polo; however, the C-pillar may have been altered to fit the boot in a little aesthetic manner. Also the boot seems boxy from the spy shots, since it has been chopped to fit within four metres.
The compact sedan will offer the same engine options as the Polo. The petrol car will use either the naturally aspirated three-cylinder 1.2-litre engine producing 74bhp and 110Nm with the five-speed manual gearbox or the 1.2-litre turbocharged TSI mill producing 103bhp and 175Nm coupled with the seven-speed DSG automatic. The diesel versions will have the new 1.5-litre engine developing 89bhp and 230Nm.
Volkswagen compact sedan will ideally compete with the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent and the Tata Zest. However, the sedan might be positioned at a premium over the rest, since the car is based on the Polo, which in itself is a premium product.
