Volkswagen, one of the latest entrants into the Indian market has already garnered everyone’s attention with its sales growth in the first couple of the months of the new year. Its month on month sales increased by 230% in January 2010 as compared to January 2009 and an increase of 168% in February 2010 as compared to February 2009.
Currently Volkswagen customers have a waiting period of two to three weeks for the powerful SUV Touareg, a month for the Jetta and Passat while customers have to wait for about two months for the iconic New Beetle. According to officials, the much awaited New Polo has also received an astounding response across the nation and has a waiting period of about one and half to two months.
Commenting on the growth, Neeraj Garg, member of board and director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd said, “The response towards our car line up especially with the New Polo has really reiterated the trust and confidence that our brand and importantly our products have been able to build up in a short span of time. We are extremely delighted to witness such response.â€
The New Polo comes at a price tag of Rs. 4.34 lakhs (ex showroom New Delhi) is now being sold at Rs. 4.42 lakhs (ex showroom New Delhi) effective March 2, 2010 due to the change in excise duty announced in the Union Budget. However, what remains to be seen is just how many numbers the Polo will do in the next one year, since it is competing in an extremely price-sensitive value-for-money segment, and is an important car for VW in India.
