Volkswagen will launch the Ameo compact sedan for the Indian market in three variants across two engine options. The car will be offered in five different shaded and is based on the Polo hatchback. It was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo and will be launched later this year.
The three variants for the compact sedan are trendline, comfortline and highline. These will be offered with the 1.2-litre petrol engine producing 74bhp/110Nm as well as a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel producing 89bhp/230Nm of torque. Both engines will get a five-speed manual as standard while the diesel will be offered with a seven-speed DSG on the comfort line and highline variants. The colours being offered are blue, silver, brown, white and grey which they have termed carbon steel.
On the feature front, the top-spec highline model gets black and beige cabin, touchscreen music system, climate control, auto dimming IRVMs, ambient lights, cruise control, rain sensing wipers, one touch and anti-pinch operation for all four windows. ABS and dual airbags are standard across all variants while the AT variants will get ESP and hill-hold function.
We believe that Volkswagen will price the Ameo in the range of Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8.25 lakh putting it on the upper spectrum of the compact sedan segment of the market. It will compete with the likes of the Ford Figo Aspire as well the premium hatchbacks like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Honda Jazz and the Hyundai Elite i20.
