BMW showed off the 8 Series earlier this year, however, what you see here in these spy pictures is the real deal. The upcoming sporty grand tourer from the German automaker was recently spotted testing at the Nurburgring.
The production spec model promises to arrive next year and will take its cues from the concept. BMW has revived the 8 Series moniker after a humble run between 1989 and 1999. The previous 8 was an all-out grand tourer but this new model will also boast of a sporty character.
The 8 Series will be based on the new CLAR platform which currently underpins the new 5 and 7 Series. The 8 coupe will be a ‘driver’s car’, asserts the Munich-based carmaker. Under the hood it will have a 3-litre straight six or a 4.4-litre V8 from the new M5. Additionally there could also be a 6.6-litre V12 from the M760Li.
BMW has trademarked the 825, 830, 835, 850, 845, 860 and M850 monikers, indicating the variants which will be available in the forthcoming 8 Series line-up. The 8 Series is one of the 40 new models that BMW aims to launch by 2019.
