Toyota has announced that the next -generation variants of both, the Innova and the Fortuner, will be based on a different platform from the current models. The new platform is called Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA).
Toyota’s current models of the Innova and the Fortuner are based on the IMV (Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle) platform that the international Hilux also boasts of. According to Economic Times, the successors of these vehicles will replace the conventional platform with TNGA. The TNGA platform would be similar to the MQB platform currently being used by Volkswagen Group. This new architecture is expected to underpin other cars from Toyota’s lineage in future.
Naomi Ishii, Toyota India’s head, says that the company’s immediate plans are to refresh its existing cars and while keeping the present customers happy. Toyota’s Indian car line-up will increase gradually as the manufacturer is contemplating making small cars based on the TNGA platform.
The Toyota Innova is the segment leader for the company in terms of sales. The refreshed version of the Innova was launched last year and we do not expect a newer version till 2016. The next-generation variants of the Fortuner and Innova should see the light of the day only in 2016.
Toyota launched the Etios Cross recently and is expected to launch the all-new Corolla soon. Both these vehicles were unveiled at the recently concluded Auto Expo. Toyota might upgrade the cars from the Etios series and launch the revised cars in the Indian car market.
