Toyota is likely to replace its 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine in the Camry with a smaller capacity four-cylinder turbocharged engine. The mill is the 2.0-litre unit found in the new Lexus IS 200t that made its debut earlier this year.
The 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit produces 245bhp and 350Nm of torque which is pretty close to the naturally aspirated V6 that produces 268bhp and 336Nm of torque. The higher torque figure automatically translates into better acceleration and obviously more low-end power which would be useful in heavy traffic situations.
In an obvious sense, the move has been aimed at improving emission standards and fuel efficiency which is a trend being followed by all manufacturers nowadays. The Camry in India is assembled through the CKD route which means that the India-spec car will get this 2.0-litre unit as and when it makes it global debut.
