- Launched in South Africa
- 1.5-litre petrol engine
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor has made its foreign debut, in South Africa, as the Starlet Cross. It features the same design, and feature list but is offered with a 1.5-litre petrol engine mated to either a five-speed MT or a four-speed AT.
The fully-loaded Starlet Cross, exported from India, gets features like a 360-degree camera, touchscreen infotainment system with wireless phone mirroring, climate control with rear AC vents, connected car technology, LED headlamps and height adjustment for the driver’s seat.
The 1.5-litre petrol engine on offer is the K15B producing 103bhp/138Nm and offered with either a five-speed MT or a four-speed AT. This is the same engine on offer with the Jimny rather than what is offered with the India-market Ertiga, XL6, Brezza and the mild-hybrid Grand Vitara/Hyryder.
Unlike India where the names of the Glanza and Taisor are far apart even though they are the same product underneath, the South African market has a much closer connection. The Starlet name is historic in South Africa and thus holds higher value in terms of brand recall.
Prices for the South African market start at the equivalent of Rs 13.74 lakh and top out Rs. 16.46 lakh Putting it significantly higher than what the car costs in the Indian market. It’s also priced at Rs 2 lakh over the Starlet/Glanza hatchback.
