Toyota has dropped in a blacked-out teaser with a scintillating silhouette of a new sports car coming to Geneva in March. Although the name Supra isn’t mentioned anywhere, the carmaker asserts that “The Legend Returns”. We suspect, it won’t be a production model, but a concept vehicle which will spawn the new iconic sports car.
Toyota said, “A modern racing concept signals at Toyota's commitment to bring back to the market its most iconic sports car” while talking about the new Geneva showstopper. However, the double-bubble roof is seen in the teaser with a duck-tail boot lid which we know belongs to the Supra from its numerous test mule appearances. Apart from that, there’s also a massive rear wing which could be a nod to the iconic A80 Supra’s iconic spoiler. The showcar from Geneva could even be a more developed model of the FT-1 Concept.
The Supra is being developed along with the new BMW Z4. The Z4 is a drop-top Roadster while the Supra will be a proper Coupe. We know that the Supra will be revealed only after the Z4 breaks cover. The production-spec Supra will employ BMW powerplants with a plug-in hybrid variant expected to join too. The transmission will be an eight-speed unit sending power to the rear wheels. However, there are rumours of an all-wheel-drive layout as well.
For more details we have to wait for the Geneva Motor Show to open its gates on 8 March. Keep watching this space for more details on the new Supra and an in-depth coverage from the Geneva stage.
