Toyota Supra fans and enthusiasts might be in for a surprise when they get to see a successor of the legendary car. According to speculations, Toyota might display a successor of the Supra sports car in the form of a concept vehicle at the Detroit Motor Show to take place in January 2014.
Toyota stopped selling the Supra in the US market back in 1998. This was the last time a brand new Supra made an appearance in the US. The Toyota Supra had featured in 1994 in the Fast and the Furious Series where Michael Ealy as Slap Jack drives a bronze Toyota Supra 2JZ. Ever since there have been many rumours about the Japanese maker bringing back the sports car to the automobile market.
The last production model of the Supra that rolled off the manufacturing plant of Toyota was equipped with a 3.0-litre twin turbo charged engine producing 320bhp of power. It was mated to a six-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission setup. Power was delivered to the rear wheels.
BMW and Toyota have collaborated to work on a new carbon fibre sports car platform which is expected to be ready by end of this year. Speculations are that the successor of the Toyota Supra might sport underpinnings based on this new platform. With the concept of this car being displayed at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, we can expect the automaker to please its fans by working upon a production version of the same and making it available by end of next year.
