Sources reveal that Toyota expects to mass produce long-range electric vehicles that should hit the market by the year 2020.
With this move, it is apparent that the car maker intends to have long-range EVs lead the way in the future as the favourable substitute to traditional cars. Toyota has always looked up to FCVs (fuel cell vehicle) in the past owing to similar range and refuelling time in comparison to conventional cars, however, the lack of hydrogen fuelling stations is considered a major hurdle.
Toyota is looking to build a team in 2017 to develop EVs with a range of 300km on a single charge, and is presently analysing if the new EVs should be based on the Prius hybrid platform, or the Corolla’s. Toyota aims to sell long-range EVs in Japan by 2020 before spreading it to other markets like California, where the law requires them to sell a definite amount of zero-emission cars.
