- Sporty design may get an engine to match
- Possible 2020 launch
Toyota recently unveiled the all-new Corolla and we must say it looks fantastic. It might have the show, but when it comes to go, the most potent engine it gets is a 2-litre, 4-cylinder engine belting out 170bhp. Now those figures won’t do much for people looking for a go-fast Corolla.
According to Car Sales, Toyota is very much interested in the hot hatch battle that is dominated by cars like the VW Golf GTI, Honda Civic Type R and the Hyundai Veloster N and as a result Toyota’s performance sub-brand, Gazoo Racing has been put to the task. Now GR already offers various stages of performance ranging from mild bolt-on parts to dedicated performance models and their 1.8-litre, 212bhp which also does duty in the Yaris GRMN could be a direct fit for the Corolla TRD.
According to Toyota, they have received lots of requests from different countries and the order of new performance models is still being decided. But don’t expect the car to be launched anytime soon with launch dates hovering around 2020.
