Toyota has announced that they are currently testing three prototypes of the GT86 with different power sources to improve its rated output. According to Toyota chief engineer Tetsuya Tada, one of the three power plants will feature in the 2015 mid-life facelift of the Toyota GT86.
This implies that the Subaru BRZ, which is essentially the same car will also get this upgrade, which was missed when the car maker recently launched the BRZ ts that focused more on ride and handling than upgrading the engine. The possible upgrades in the next model may include forced induction, hybrid technology or a bigger engine.
There is no information available on how much the power will be upped by, but rumour has it that the 200PS power that it’s currently makes from the 2.0-litre boxer engine would be increased to 260PS. The same engine currently powers the Impreza as well but at an under tuned state producing a little over 150PS.
The BRZ which is widely considered as the common man’s sports car will heavily benefit from this upgrade as the lack of power is one of the few concerns posted by enthusiast around the world about the RWD coupe. The BRZ or the GT86 is one of those car’s that we hope comes to India soon for its appropriate blend of performance and practicality, and with this engine upgrade in the pipeline, we want it even more.
