The Toyota Etios Cross was unveiled at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo last month and as we had reported earlier, the company has started accepting bookings of the car for a token of Rs 50,000. Though Toyota hasn’t revealed the launch date of the car, it seems that the company has finished production of the first batch of the car and according to the latest spyshots, the cars have already reached the dealerships. On closer inspection, you can also make out a Corolla Altis parked in front of the Etios Cross in one of the pictures, which indicates that the dispatch of the new sedan to the dealerships has also begun.
The Etios Cross is a beefed up version of the Etios Liva hatchback. The car sports an aggressive body kit, complete with plastic body cladding, roof rails and skid plates, to give it a rugged look. The car is taller, wider and longer than the hatchback, though it manages to stay under the four metre mark. The Etios Cross will be available in three engine options, two petrols and a diesel, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Corolla Altis for the Indian market is based on the European-spec car and is wider and longer than the current car. Designed along the ‘Furia’ design philosophy, the car gets a complete makeover, courtesy the new front fascia and sharper body lines. Inside, the car has been updated with the latest in-car technology and safety features. The engine lineup is expected to be retained: a 1.8-litre petrol engine and a 1.4-litre diesel unit. Both cars come with a six-speed manual with the petrol getting the option of a seven-speed automatic.
With the cars already having arrived at the dealership, it seems that the launch date of the cars isn’t very far. Previous speculations have suggested a May-end launch for the cars, though there hasn’t been any official word from Toyota. The Etios Cross is expected to be priced in the Rs 5 lakh to Rs 8 lakh bracket to go up against the Volkswagen Cross Polo and the upcoming Fiat Avventura. The Corolla Altis on the other hand is a D-Segment sedan and is expected to be priced in the Rs 12 lakh to Rs 17 lakh range.
