Toyota is set to unveil its 11th generation Corolla at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. Toyota will bring the European-spec car in India, which shares the same basic shape, interior and chassis as its American counterpart, but has different front and rear styling. The car has been previously spotted testing in India outside Toyota’s facility near Bengaluru.
The American Corolla looks quite sporty, whereas the European-spec version has been designed as more of a ‘prestige’ car. Derived from the ‘Furia’ design philosophy, the car looks aggressive despite being toned down from the American version. The new car is wider and longer than the current model with an extra 75mm of wheelbase being added. The front of the car carries sharp lines for the bumper and the hood, a three-bar chrome grille and another smaller grille below the bumper. The headlamps have been blacked out and standout owing to the LED inserts. The wheel arches are heavily flared and house the redesigned alloy-wheels. Toyota claims that the car has lower NVH levels than the outgoing car. The new rear bumpers and the tail lamps give the car an equally aggressive look along with a slight reminiscence of the current Camry.Inside, the car features a fully upgraded dashboard, upholstery and instrument cluster along with a slew of creature comforts.
In India, the Toyota Corolla will continue using the current car’s engine line-up which includes a 1.8-litre VVT petrol and a 1.4-litre D-4D turbo diesel. The former engine produces 138bhp and 173Nm of torque while the latter makes 87bhp and 205Nm of torque. While the petrol variant comes with an option of six-speed manual and a seven-speed CVT automatic the diesel is available only with a six-speed manual transmission gearbox.
With a launch likely in June, we can expect the Corolla to be placed in the Rs 12 lakh to Rs 17 lakh price bracket. The car will go up against the VW Jetta, Chevrolet Cruze, Hyundai Elantra and the Skoda Octavia.
