The Delhi Government had recently announced a reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 12.5 per cent to 5 per cent for hybrid cars, battery-operated vehicles and e-rickshaws. Owing to the new revision, the Toyota Camry Hybrid in Delhi is now cheaper by Rs 2.30 lakh.
Post revision in VAT, the Camry Hybrid which was earlier priced at Rs 33.20 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) is now offered at Rs 30.90 lakh (Ex-showroom, Delhi). The reduction in VAT comes forth as the government’s initiative to promote eco-friendly vehicles that help reduce pollution and also help in bringing relief to a large number of entrepreneurs who earn their livelihood by plying e-rickshaws.
Toyota had introduced the Camry sedan in India way back in 2013. Based on updates from the company, as much as 90 per cent of the demand has been for the Camry Hybrid. From January to April this year, Toyota sold about 419 units of the Camry Hybrid, while only 44 units of the regular petrol-powered model were sold in the same period.
The Toyota Camry Hybrid is powered by a 2.5-litre four-cylinder VVT-i engine supported by a permanent magnet synchronous motor with a 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hybrid battery pack. The Hybrid Synergy Drive system is capable of sensing and changing the source of power from petrol engine to electric motor. Mated to an E-CVT automatic transmission, the cumulative power output is 199bhp and 213Nm of torque. In terms of fuel efficiency, the hybrid claims to return an impressive figure of 19kmpl.
The pricing for the Toyota Camry Hybrid has not been revised in other states except for Delhi where the VAT percentage has been reduced.
