Toyota Motor Corporation (Toyota) and Suzuki Motor Corporation (Suzuki) put out more details regarding their collaboration. Last year, the two Japanese carmakers announced an alliance for mutual sharing of technology and models in India. Fresh details have now confirmed that Toyota will receive two compact vehicles built on Suzuki platforms – which are Ciaz and Ertiga – from Maruti Suzuki in India.
According to the previous announcement, Suzuki will supply the Baleno and Vitara Brezza models to Toyota, while Toyota will supply the Corolla to Suzuki. Now, as per the new communique, Toyota will receive Ciaz and Ertiga in India, while Suzuki will benefit from Toyota’s RAV4, Corolla Wagon in the European market. We already know that the alliance between the two will bear its first fruit later this year with the Toyota badged Baleno arriving in the second half of 2019.
This model-sharing will extend beyond just badge-engineering, both the carmakers have assured. Toyota would rely on its current customer base and differ in the buying experience on the rebadged products. Moreover, it will also help Toyota to further strengthen its foothold in the Indian market. Suzuki has been a strong player in the small car segment but it doesn’t have any presence in the D-segment space. This collaboration will help Suzuki mark its presence in the segment with the Corolla Altis.
