Ever heard that song California Dreaming? Nice one, isn’t it, specially while you are on the road. There's also an automotive product, a namesake of this song, albeit without the dreaming part of it! It is called Ferrari California. Just when we thought things are becoming dull and everyone is thinking “greenâ€, Ferrari has showcased a car that evokes nostalgic sentiments.
The Ferrari California, that re-introduces the legendary name California (which was affixed to Ferrari 250 of the yesteryears), will derive power from a 4300cc source capable of delivering close to 465PS of power. The V-8 engine is derived from the Maserati Gran Turismo. The chassis and bodywork are made of aluminium. Helping the rubber lay all that ferocious power to the tarmac will be a 7-speed dual clutch transmission. The California will also come equipped with F1-Trac traction control system which can also be found in the 599 GTB Fiorano. Carbon-ceramic Brembo units are offered as standard anchors.
Styled by Pininfarina, the Ferrari California will be the company’s entry-level GT car. Head-on, the sexy looks are inspired from the 599, with a little retro element thrown in to make it evocative of the Ferrari 250 GT California of 1960s. The rear is equally gorgeous and sports circular tail lamps and quad exhaust pipes as on the F430. The folding hard-top is what makes this car stand out. It’s made of aluminium which helps her be light. Handling should by typical Ferrari – taut and confidence inspiring.
But what sense does it make for India? Well, much has been said about Ferrari’s plan of entering the Indian market in the near future, and whenever the Italians decide upon that, California could be a very good proposition to bring in.
Though there is no definite launch date, expect the car to go on sale in the international market in 2009. Lambo, Porsche and Aston Martin should soon have something to worry about. It could carry a price tag of just over INR 1 Crore.
