Supercars. The holy grail for petrolheads running high octane fuel in the veins. Posters of these supercars with fire-breathing engines, space-age technology, and drooling beauty adorn the walls of every teenage boy, who dreams of owning them one day. And for the lucky few who actually can own them, these supercars are reduced to mere prized trophies adorning their parking spaces and pavements. And as long as they dwell amidst concrete jungles, these highly finished examples of technology never get to stretch their game legs or allow the needles of their tachometers to hit the red. So what better place for these gorgeous beauties than a quarter mile drag strip laid out just for the purpose of pure speed and exploiting the trapped potentials these cars are equipped with. This year at the Valley Run 2017, it was a rare pleasure to firsthand witness some of these exotic and rare supercars achieving their ultimate goal of going fast and going hard, even if it was for only a quarter mile each time.
Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG
Lurking under the long hood of this menacing SL63 AMG is a 6.2-liter V-8 behemoth. Loaded with all the sophisticated gizmos in its time, the SL63 has a stability of a guided missile and power figures to shame most modern day sports cars. The SL63 AMG did the quarter mile run in an impressive 13.74seconds and it goes on to prove that a German muscle car never goes out of style.
Lamborghini Huracan
There was no shortage of the baby Lambo at the drag scene, but a special attention goes to the red hot Huracan. With the best time of 10.97seconds, it was the fastest car of the day. The 5.2-litre V10 mill pushing 601bhp of madness to all four wheels via a specially designed mechanical self-locking differential. Watching the baby Lambo disappear in fiery red dot across the horizon was a sight to behold.
Audi RS7
You don’t expect a car this big, with four doors and the luxury of a yacht, to pick her skirts up and run in a way the RS7 does. The Sportback was so quick off the line, it gave its sportier brethren, the R8, a run for its money. The 4.0-litre TFSI is pumping out more than 600bhp and you can carry four people along in utmost luxury. What’s more, the RS7 turned out to be the second fastest car with a respectable time of 11.50seconds.
Nissan GTR
The car which eats the other supercars for breakfast has to be here at the event, with all its geeky wizardry. The GTRs are manufactured in a hermetically sealed factory, and these are the cars with the most amazing launch control seen this side of the hypercar territory. This blue hue GTR did a striking 11.56second run as its fastest and settled down with all the other JDMs in the park ferme. The GTR is one of the few tuners that can give all the supercars a run for their money in their own backyard.
Chevrolet Corvette
Now the last thing you would expect to turn up at Indian Speed Week is a right-hand-drive Chevrolet Corvette. But there it was, basking in all its glory, a C06 Vette with a V8 prowling to be unleashed on the drag strip. The American was supercharged to 8psi and was running a wide body kit scrounged from the top-notch Z06. The stealthy black paint scheme with red body stripes all point to the fact that this is not a car to mess with.
