Despite car manufacturers reporting mixed results in December car sales, the hatchbacks did reasonably well. They still remain to be the preferred choice of buyers and form the major chunk of the overall car sales (55 per cent) in India. We've taken an account of the most selling hatchbacks and shortlisted the top five for you to take a look at.
The Alto, Maruti Suzuki's entry-level hatchback, tops this list with 22,589 units sold in December 2015. The car has been selling like hot cakes and is continuously averaging more than 21,000 units every month. No wonder the most affordable product from Maruti is the highest selling hatchback and still continues to be the runaway segment leader.
The Maruti Suzuki WagonR bags second position in this list as 14,645 units were sold last month. The year-on-year sales numbers for this vehicle increased by 18.8 per cent. All of this can be attributed to the huge popularity of the hatchback for its tallboy design and decent cabin space.
The 14,548 units of the Swift sold in December 2015 show a 22.7 per cent hike as compared to December 2014 figures. And despite the 16.4 per cent drop in the year-on-year sales of the Swift, the car managed to get the third position. This hatch was the country's first premium-level hatchback when launched in 2005 and still pulls off a decent number when it comes to its sales.
Hyundai's sales numbers surged by a good amount with the launch of the Grand i10 and continues to be high with its huge demand. The company managed to sell one lakh units of the car within a year of its launch. Its high sales numbers are due to the cabin comfort and numerous features at a great price. With 12,749 units sold last month, the Grand i10 is ranked at number 4.
The Baleno is the latest entrant from Maruti and it has already dethroned segment leader Hyundai i20. The former's sales numbers stood at 10,572 in December 2015, while the latter's are at 10,379 units. The Baleno's modern looks, a spacious cabin and an equipment list and features on par with the competition has helped it outnumber its rivals and sneak into the top five list of the hot seller hatches last month.
