Electric vehicles stole the limelight at the 2018 Auto Expo. One such EV was the performance variant of the BMW i3 electric hatchback - the i3s. Here are the top five features of the car, exhibited at the biennial event in Delhi.
More power
BMW has increased the engine’s power output in the i3s from 170bhp (125 kW) to 184bhp (135 kW), and at the same time, increased the maximum torque from 250Nm to 270Nm.
Sports suspension
The new BMW i3s comes equipped with sports suspension as standard, which brings in a 10mm drop in ride height. The additional 40mm of track width as compared to the BMW i3 gets an added impact by the black wheel arch borders. The exclusive 20-inch light-alloy wheels in double-spoke design are 20mm wider than the previously available versions.
Better performance
BMW says there is a 40 per cent improvement over the i3 with special bearings, better motor speed range and higher rpm. This helps the i3s sprint from 0-100kmph in just 6.9 seconds, as against the i3's 7.3 seconds.
All-LED lighting
The new BMW i3 and new BMW i3s, both come equipped with all-LED headlights as standard. These lamps employ LED bulb units for dipped beam, high beam and the DRLs as well. The new turn signal indicators also feature LED technology, which are integrated into the front apron as horizontal strips.
Driver assistance systems
The driver assistance systems available for the BMW i3s are designed to ease the driver's workload and provide support in various traffic situations. They also help with longitudinal and lateral vehicle control. Apart from the optional Parking Assistance package, there’s Driving Assistant Plus too, which incorporates Collision and Pedestrian Warning, Proactive Driving Assistant, etc. amongst others. Another USP is the Traffic Jam assistant that not only maintains a safe distance from the vehicle in front in stop-and-go traffic at up to 60kmph, but also keeps the car in lane. Lane markings, the width of the road and vehicles travelling ahead are gauged by this system.
