Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has released the monthly sales data of our automobile industry for May 2016. Without further ado, we took a look at the top-10 best-selling cars. It is not surprising that Maruti Suzuki’s products have dominated this space, but the variation in the sales numbers has also given us an idea of the change in trend of Indian consumers' demand. Take a look.
Rank 1 Maruti Suzuki Alto
The Alto has continuously been at the top of this list and as repetitive as it gets, it continues to rule this space of highest selling cars. It has secured the first position with 19,874 units sold in May 2016. A couple of months ago, the Renault Kwid had dented its sales figures by a bit, but now the Alto’s sales numbers have again revived, clearly putting it way ahead of all cars.
Rank 2 Maruti Suzuki Dzire
The most popular compact sedan, the Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire, is back in form as its sales numbers have seen a hike from its earlier performance. And though the total sales of 16,968 units has put the compact sedan in the second spot, the car's year-on-year growth has decreased by 13.7 per cent. Nevertheless, it continues to take a huge lead in the compact sedan segment in our country.
Rank 3 Maruti Suzuki WagonR
The battle of top-3 cars in sales still continues amongst Maruti Suzuki products. The WagonR has settled for rank 3 in this list with 13,231 units sold last month. Thankfully, this Maruti Suzuki product shows a 6.1 per cent year-on-year growth.
Rank 4 Maruti Suzuki Swift
Having grown old amidst new competition, the Maruti Suzuki Swift sees itself move down this list from the second spot this month. Sales for the Swift were down by 28.1 per cent (year-on-year) to 12,355 units last month. That said, it is still the king in the B-segment of cars in India.
Rank 5 Hyundai Grand i10
Hyundai sold 12,055 units of the Grand i10 last month. This is the Swift's only competitor that has managed to come so close in the sales charts. Its rank has been hovering around this mid-section of this list and its steady demand can be attributed to its sporty looks and a feature-rich cabin.
Rank 6 Hyundai Elite i20
The Hyundai Elite i10 has carved quite a liking for itself since its launch in India and has gone on to become Hyundai's second best-selling model as well. 10,472 units were sold in May 2016. The strong performance of the premium hatchback is expected to continue as its good demand still prevails.
Rank 7 Maruti Suzuki Baleno
The premium hatchback segment was targeted by Maruti Suzuki last year with the launch of the Baleno. With its instant success, it might seem that the Baleno might have cannibalised sales for its siblings, but has given the carmaker a fighter in the premium segment. At 10,004 units last month, the Baleno isn't too far from the Elite i20's sales figures.
Rank 8 Maruti Suzuki Celerio
Maruti Suzuki's Celerio has been struggling to find a position in the top-10 list of cars for some time. However, this time around, it has found itself a spot with 7,379 units sold last month.
Rank 9 Toyota Innova
The sales of the Innova had plummeted, but the new Toyota Innova Crysta is back into this list with 7,259 units sold. Thanks to the latest iteration of the Toyota Innova launched recently this year, the MPV’s sales are rising again. It should also be noted that this vehicle is the only MPV to feature in this list.
Rank 10 Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza
The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza has managed to sneak into this list with 7,193 units sold last month. Its sales performance is not just better than its competitors, but the long-standing Mahindra Bolero has been dislodged from this list. In fact, the Maruti's compact SUV has been quick to supersede siblings Omni, Eeco and the Ciaz as well.
