Although there is quite some time before the all-new Volvo S90 gets a green light for production, Auto Express has released an exclusive image, showing how the Swedish automaker’s new mid-size luxury sedan could look like.
Due for a 2016 launch, the new S90 will rival the likes of BMW 5-Series, Audi A6 and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. As seen here, the car retains the basic silhouette of the existing S80 sedan but with a few modern touches from the brand’s newest design language seen recently on the all-new generation XC90 SUV.
According to the report, the S90 will make use of the same SPA platform that underpins the XC90. What this means is that the sedan will also be offered with Volvo’s new range of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. We expect a plug-in hybrid version too.
The S90 is expected to make its debut in the next couple of years. In all probability, it will replace the ageing S80 which has been around for longer than we can remember. In this day and age, the S80 simply feels outdated when compared to a similarly sized BMW, Audi or Mercedes. The new S90, then, is the right way forward for Volvo if it wants to really challenge the Germans in the mid-size luxury sedan segment.
