While walking through the 2016 Auto Expo, the 2016 bit does get very apparent. The extensive use of plastic and designs based only for performance gains is very apparent. The 1968 debutant Datsun Bluebird 1600SSS or 510 is oddly a breath of fresh air.
This eccentric Datsun 510 is no ordinary ‘poor man’s BMW’. This is a car which participated and won the 18th East African Safari Rally which is considered to be one of the toughest rallies in the world. Up to 90 per cent of the cars that entered the rally didn’t make it to the end.
The rally comes with the hazards of wildlife and farm animals on the course. Furthermore, there's the earth of Africa itself, which comes in every size and type, from a fine dust that clogs car air filters and blinds drivers in its huge clouds, to bowling ball sized boulders that punish both drivers and suspension components in equal measure.
Edgar Herrmann and Hans Schüller took this machine to win the eighth year after its debut entry, they also won both class and team category championships. The rally car also fortunately comes in its original unrestored condition.
Do make sure to click a picture with the car and let Nissan know we appreciate them bringing down one of their cars from their heritage collection. Who knows, we could see the super rare "Ken & Mary" Skyline H/T 2000GT-R at the 2018 Auto Expo.
