- Volkswagen is testing an automatic variant of the Polo, which might be launched by the end of August. The AT gearbox will be mated to the 1.6-litre Polo petrol Highline variant with the same configuration as in the VW Vento – 105bhp and 143Nm of torque.
- Hyundai will launch the new D-segment sedan, Elantra, in the second week of August. Unlike the global markets the Elantra will also get a diesel engine in India; this will be the same 1.6-litre diesel used in the Verna with some extra grunt at 125bhp and 260Nm.
- Mark Webber won the ninth round of the 2012 Formula 1 Championship yesterday at the Silverstone circuit, UK. Right tyre strategy helped the Red Bull driver take the lead from Fernando Alonso who lost dominated the 46 out of 52 laps of the race. The defending champion, Sebastian Vettel, finished third to give Red Bull substantial lead in the constructors’ title; however, Alonso still leads the drivers’ championship for Ferrari with a decent margin.
- Toyota dealerships in Delhi are hosting bunch of activities to promote the brand and also the Etios Racing Series. The customised and race built Etios and the Liva are also on display at Galaxy Toyota and Grace Toyota in the capital city.
- CNG prices have gone up by up to Rs 3.30 per kg in the NCR region (National Capital Region). The new rates of CNG are Rs 38.35 per kg in New Delhi and Rs 43.10 per kg in Noida. Indraprastha Gas (IGL) says the hike in mainly due to increasing dependence on imports, rupee depreciation and hike in electricity rates.
- The French car maker, Renault, hopes to sell around one lakh units a year in India, by 2013-14. Renault needs at least one more successful mass production model in their range along with the Duster and Pulse to reach that mark in the next fiscal year. The company will be hoping that the C-segment sedan Scala (rebadged Nissan Sunny) with the efficient diesel engine and lot more space as compared to most other cars in the segment will be that model.
- Suzuki has launched the facelift version of the hatchback, Splash, in the UK market. The Splash is sold in India as the Ritz and we are expecting that this facelift version will be made available here before Diwali.
- Mahindra has launched the hard top version of the mini passenger van, the Maxximo, for the starting price of Rs 3.7 lakh (ex-showroom Ahmedabad). The new version of the Maxximo is powered by the same twin-cylinder CRDi diesel engine that powers rest of the minivan range.
- Premier will launch the BSIV diesel variants of their only passenger vehicle, the Rio, later this month. The Rio will be powered by the mostly commonly used diesel engine in India – the 1.3-litre Fiat multijet churning out 75bhp.
