The Bentley Continental Flying Spur Speed is going to be the launch to wait for in 2009. It is really going to push the envelope when it comes to four-door luxury saloons. The Continental Flying Spur in essence was a Continental GT with four doors and the Flying Spur Speed is a four-door version of the Continental GT speed. But it is not as simple as adding two rear entrances with hinges and metal sheets to the Continental GT speed. There are many things to take into account and Bentley being Bentley, have taken it upon themselves to make the fastest four-door luxury car one of the best as well.
The exterior is not going to surprise you too much with the changes being limited to the front grille and air intakes. The redesigned rear bumpers give and the wider exhaust pipes add to the aggressive stance. These material changes are immaterial to an extent as the sill plates on all four doors read ‘Speed’. The 6.0l, 600bhp, twin-turbo V12 propels it to 100kph in 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 322kph. The Speed now is 10mm lower than the Flying Spur with new 19-inch multi-spoke Pirelli P zero performance rubber. Carbon-ceramic disc brakes are on the options list. The self-adjusting air suspension with thicker front and rear stabilizer bars make cornering and the overall drive as smooth as the dispersal of dandelion seeds. The existing Servotronic steering system has been improved upon for greater response. The radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control has also been revamped with follow-to-stop precision and five time-gap settings.
On the inside, there is the Naim 1100W audio unit custom-made for this Bentley. Optional features on the Speed includes a bright chromed grille, piano black and dark stained Burr Walnut veneers, diamond-quilted leather to seat facings and doors, headrests with embroidered Bentley emblem, a three-spoke sports steering wheel with single-tone leather and sporting gear lever finished with snarled and ridged chrome and leather and drilled alloy sport foot pedals - all this at no additional cost. The legendary ‘Speed’ models of 1923 were also performance extensions of the regular offerings from Bentley. Expect no less from the Flying Spur Speed.
