Tesla has released the first teaser image for its new Model Y compact SUV. This will be a global compact vehicle and will mark the American automaker’s foray into the more affordable sections of the global car market. The image was released during the electric automotive giant’s shareholders press conference at the HQ on Tuesday.
There was not much we could glean from this image since the car sits in darkness, but we can see a high roofline and of course the famous Tesla grille, which is one of the defining elements of the car.
Sources suggest that much of the design has been taken from Model 3, but of course, with the all the SUV characteristics. What’s more, this car will be built at a new facility on a new platform. This separation from the current Tesla range, both in terms of build and construction location, hints that the automaker maybe working out a way to bring costs down but increase production. Tesla’s role as an automotive provider will only become bigger and bigger as the world moves slowly towards electric power and away from combustion engines.
The car is expected to begin production late next year and will be ready for the road sometime in 2019.
