After reassuring investors that the delayed production of the Model 3 will soon get back on track, Tesla is now gearing up for the next target, the Model Y SUV. While it has not been officially confirmed, the word is out that Tesla has issued requests-for-information (RFI) to their supplier base for preliminary bids for supplier contracts.
Tesla has indicated that the Model Y SUV will be built at Fremont, California and the production might begin from November 2019. As an industry standard, such RFIs are ideally sent out about 30 months before the commencement of production and an 18 month time-line would certainly be a tough ask.
But Tesla is known to set such steep targets and try to achieve them and this target is certainly not unachievable. The Model 3 and the Model Y will be the volume generators for the Tesla and will have the largest shares in its revenue stream.
