Tata Motors Limited has bagged the second prize in the automobile sector for 'National Energy Conservation Award' for 2014. The company's Dharwad plant was rewarded for its initiatives taken to conserve energy and reduce specific energy consumption.
The Dharwad Plant has installed several advanced technologies that includes robotics, automated line with automated guided vehicles and ultramodern manufacturing systems and practices, and is in line with world-class manufacturing practices.
The green-field plant began operations on March 3, 2012 and ever since then it has achieved nearly 49 per cent reduction in specific consumption of thermal energy and 29 per cent reduction in specific consumption of power usage over the year 2012-2013.
The facility was awarded for its achievement in fuel savings through decreasing High Speed Diesel (HSD) consumption in hot water generator by optimising burner-nozzle size, efficient burner management at paint heating oven, use of low degreasing temperature chemicals and improving output of painting process.
The use of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) for air supply units, optimisation of compressed air consumption and power factor and controlling High Mast / Street lights usage also helped in doing a lot of power savings. The National Energy Conservation Award is instituted by the Ministry of Power and is adjudged by the Award Evaluation Committee under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency.
