Tata Motors is working on downsizing its large diesel engine to overcome the Delhi diesel vehicle ban. It currently has a 2.2-litre mill powering the Safari range and the Aria as well as a much older 3.0-litre mill powering both BS3 and BS4 variants of the Tata Sumo.
Speaking during the launch of the Tata Tiago hatchback in Mumbai on Wednesday, Girish Wagh, said that Tata was working on re-engineering its existing engines to comply with the requirements of the ban. He did not however specify when the revised engines would be launched or what their capacity would be. Tata will be following in the footsteps of Mahindra who introduced a 1.99-litre engine for the Scorpio and XUV500 earlier this year to go around the diesel engine ban.
The NCR administration, had in late 2015, introduced a ban on the sale and registration of diesel vehicles with engines above the 2.0-litre capacity in a bid to combat massive pollution issue. The ban was imposed till March 31 and has now been extended till further notice.
