Tata will launch CNG and diesel variants of the Nano next year. This was confirmed by the company’s managing director, Karl Slym. He said the CNG model would be out by the middle of next year but added that the diesel variant will materialise a bit later.
Tata sold 4004 units of the Nano in October as compared to 3868 units in the corresponding period last year leading to an increase of four per cent. Despite the growth, the company has admitted that it has been behind on its plans. However, it is optimistic that the Nano will find success in rural and urban areas.
While the CNG Nano will still be powered by a 660cc engine, the diesel variant will get a larger mill. Both these models are expected to reduce the running costs of India’s cheapest car even further. Given that Tata has sufficient experience in both avenues, the vehicles should be quite reliable.
We might also get to see these models with some of the features that were on the special Diwali edition Nano like glove box and a music system as standard. Some spy shots of a Nano with an openable boot has been doing the rounds on the interweb, expect this feature to be present when the variants launch.
