Tata Motors has gone on a product offensive in 2017 with the launches of the Tata Hexa and the Tiago AMT along with the unveiling of the Tamo Racemo and the Nexon at Geneva. The Tigor compact sedan, based on the successful Tata Tiago, will be launched tomorrow and we almost know everything about the car except the price tag. There has been a lot of guesswork and we have here our set of guesses based on some real science and number-crunching.
The Indian automotive market suggests Rs 50,000 premium on the price tag if you add a boot to your hatch. The Tiago sits a segment lower than all the other hatchbacks that have grown into compact sedans, and so ideally, the price difference should be lower. With the Tiago starting at Rs 3.24 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi, the Tigor pricing should ideally start at not more than Rs 3.75 lakh. But considering the fact that all of its direct competitors start at a price tag above Rs 5 lakh, Tata might want to gain some margin, especially after the cut-throat pricing of the Tiago.
The Tata Tigor XB petrol, the base trim, might be priced between Rs 3.8 to Rs 3.99 lakh, to make sure the Tigor gets it sticker price right and also have some leeway for their margins. As we go up the trims, the price difference between the Tiago and the Tigor will remain close to Rs 60,000 for both the petrol and the diesel engine cars.
The top-spec Tigor XZ might be priced at about Rs 5.5 lakh for the petrol engine with a manual gearbox while the top-spec Tigor XZ diesel should have its price tag below Rs 6.5 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi.
The Tigor matches all the compact sedans in size, space and equipment and if it is priced the way we think it should be, the Tigor will be cheaper than the Maruti Swift Dzire by over Rs 1.25 lakh, ex-showroom, which will mean an on-road price difference of almost Rs 1.5 lakh. The Tata Tigor will then be the ideal option for the city-commuting compact sedan buyers as it offers much more value for money, just like the Tata Indigo CS did when it ushered the era of compact sedans when the full-size sedans ruled the day.
We expect the prices to be as follows –
