Tata has announced that the Safari Storme has got over 6000 bookings since it was launched on October 17, 2012. This was confirmed by Ashesh Dhar, head of UV product group during the launch of the SUV in Chennai.
The SUV was launched as a successor to the highly successful but ageing Safari and features many changes both inside and outside. It is powered by the 2.2-litre diesel engine (producing 138bhp and 320Nm of torque) that sits in the Aria MPV. The overall design has also been updated and the SUV is now based on a ladder-on-frame chassis.
The other major upgrade includes disc brakes on all four wheels and shift-on-the fly four-wheel drive system for the top-end variant. Tata is also likely to upgrade the Safari by increasing the output of the engine, installing a high-end music system as well an automatic transmission. The move will allow the Safari Storme to compete with the Mahindra XUV500 as well as the Ssangyong Rexton.
The vehicle was being launched in a phased manner for Rs 9.95 lakh (one price throughout) and will be available across the country by the middle of next month.
