When Tata acquired JLR in 2008 it was in a less than enviable position with many even questioning the Mumbai-based automaker’s decision. However, if we fast forward to just six years, the company has become one of the most profitable ventures under the Tata banner. Now, for what seems like the first time, the company has revealed the extent to which collaboration is taking place between both manufacturers in terms of design and development.
Reports suggest that the platform underpinning the Nexon concept vehicle will be shared between Tata and JLR and is likely to make its way into the next Evoque or Jaguar vehicle whenever it is launched. However, given the difference in pedigree of both brands, it is expected that the sharing will be restricted to the underpinnings and there will be no form of badge engineering from both manufacturers.
It only seems logical for this sharing to take place given the vast resources of the Tata group, the technological, design prowess of the leaping cat and most importantly the benefits that both companies will reap in the future.
