The Tata Nano, people’s car and India’s cheapest set of four wheels is likely to become a taxi in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Its state transport department has received applications to use the Nano as a commercial taxi and charge the same fare as an auto rickshaw.
As per reports, the State government is reviewing the applications and has called for detailed proposals from those interested. The Nano taxis will only be operated within the Srinagar Development Area and the Jammu Development Area.
The government has also said that those who run the cabs should have fully functional offices, dedicated parking lots; cars should be fitted with a GPS unit, air conditioners and should not be more than two years old at the time of induction. Reports suggest it has also allotted red, black and white colours for the cabs.
The concept of a Nano taxi already exists in Sri Lanka and is quite popular. Given that it is quite cold for the most of the year in J & K and the fact that the state seems to live off tourism to a large extent, it would seem like a nice idea to have a fully covered form of public transport at throw away prices.
