It is an open secret that Tata Motors has steadily worked on its global icon - the Nano since its arrival back in 2008. The brand has put in a lot of effort to improve the model’s state of affairs in the small car space. Having already introduced a number of updated models, followed by a more efficient CNG version and more recently, one with power steering as standard, Tata isn’t quite done yet.
The brand is working on a new version of the Nano, one that is bound to set the sales figures right for the struggling model and give it more than a fighting chance to redeem itself in the segment. The model in question is, of course, the Nano diesel.
The Nano diesel has been in the making for a long time now, with spy shots of the test mules appearing on the internet more often than any of other upcoming models from Tata Motors. The car is expected to debut soon, however, according to a recent report coming from Indian Autos Blog; it could take some time before Tata brings out this new product. The report, in fact, says that Tata Motors have no immediate plans to launch the Nano diesel owing to the unhinged price-value equation with the petrol and diesel prices. In the view of Mr Ranjit Yadav, president of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Business, “The entry A1 and A2 segments will be petrol so diesel does not make that much effective sense.”
Tata, it seems, is now focusing on further improvising the Nano by adding upgraded variants with more creature comforts and better ergonomics. In keeping with the theory, the brand has launched the Nano Twist with power steering as standard. Tata even had a show car at the 2014 Auto Expo featuring an AMT (Automated-manual) gearbox and a functioning hatch.
