Tata Motors are currently working on an entry-level sub four-metre sedan and will launch the car within the next few months. The sub-four metre sedan segment is currently one of the hottest growing segments and comprises cars like the Swift Dzire, the upcoming Mahindra Verito CS, Honda Amaze (due in april) and Tata’s own Indigo eCS.
It is likely that this car could be a smaller and slightly cut-down version of the Manza sedan or a face lifted version of the Indigo eCS itself. In the case of the former, we would see changes to the basic design of the car along with a few cost cutting measures to the interiors. The engine line up and underpinnings are expected to remain the same, although Tata may is not likely offer the 90bhp diesel mill for this car.
The face lifted Tata Indigo eCS on the other hand will get refreshed interiors as well as few updates but is will remain the same in terms of engine and underpinnings to keep the costs down. The company has however refused to say more than the fact that it is currently working on the car.
Cars that are below four metres in length qualify for 12 per cent excise duty rather than the 24 per cent that is charged on vehicles above four-metres. They get further exemptions if the engine is a diesel version below 1.5-litres and it is almost certain that Tata will take full advantage of this combination to price the upcoming car competitively.
