The 2018 Auto Expo is landmark in more than one ways. While new global carmakers who are yet to arrive are showcasing their contenders for the Indian market, Indian manufacturers are catching up with the global game and Tata Motors is set to be one of the forerunners.
Tata Motors is all set to unveil their smart-cars with connectivity options, autonomous driving technology and of course, the electric powertrains. Now Tata Motors has already built 250 electric Tata Tigor cars for EESL and one of those will certainly get a place on the stage. Since the Tigor and the Tiago are built on the same platform, you can expect a Tiago EV as well.
Early last year, Tata Motors had announced their partnership with Microsoft for the connected and smart-car platform and the snazzy looking concept hatchback that was showcased then should make it to the line-up as well. The connected car program aims at bringing together advanced machine learning, artificial intelligence and Internet of things to deliver an enhanced driving experience.
The connected car program will also feature commercial smart vehicles which will be an integral part of the smart cities that India plans to build. With the Tata conglomerate completing 150 years in 2018, Tata Motors looks to turn a new leaf in their mobility business.
And that includes Tata Motor’s first premium hatchback codenamed the X-451. This is the first car to be built on the new Advanced Modular Platform (AMP) which will also spawn a C-Segment sedan and a premium compact SUV in the next couple of years.
Also expected to debut is an all-new SUV based on an entirely new platform derived from Land Rover’s entry-level platform that spawns the Discovery Sport. Tata Motors has been testing the new platform with a Discovery Sport body and hence we can only guess about what it could be. While we would love it to be the all-new Safari that is being promised to us all these years, it might very well turn out to be Tata’s flagship SUV and a full-size seven-seater at that.
