According to rumours, Tata Motors is reportedly working on a new hatchback called the Kite (codename: XO) to be positioned below the Bolt. The upcoming Kite might replace the Tata Indica which has soldiered on for almost two decades now.
The source mentions that the Kite will be based on the Indica’s platform and will get extensive styling updates in comparison to the Bolt and the Zest. Tata is working on a new 1.0-litre three-pot diesel engine producing 64bhp and 140Nm of torque. This Euro V compliant engine will be mated to a five-speed manual and an AMT gearbox as well. Along with this, the Kite will also get a new 1.2-litre petrol engine which might be turbocharged.
When launched, the Kite will compete with the likes of the Maruti Celerio and the Hyundai i10. This new project is a step in the right direction for Tata Motors after launching the Zest and the Bolt. A volume selling car is essential to climb up the sales ladder and the Kite will fit the bill perfectly. Tata will expect the Kite to recreate the success of the Indica and to turn around their fortunes in India.
