Tata Motors has said that it is currently developing a mini SUV and this was confirmed R & D chief Tim Leverton recently. The mini SUV will be based on the X1 platform that currently underpins the Vista hatchback and the Manza and is expected to take on vehicles like the Renault Duster, Ford Ecosport and the Mahindra Quanto.
While there are hardly any details about the mini SUV apart from the platform, we believe that it will share many of its components with the hatchback and sedans including a range of petrol and diesel engines. It is also likely that mini SUV will be a sub four-metre model to capitalise on the benefits offered by the government to vehicles of such size.
The Indian SUV major has planned to invest over a billion USD over the next five years for product development in a bid to revive its fortunes, especially in the home markets which have been seeing a steady decline for quite a while now.
Among the new products that are expected in the next few years are the Diesel and CNG Nano, The air powered car and of course the mini SUV.
