The automated manual transmission (AMT) developed by Tata Motors will feature in the new Zest. The cars from the manufacturer’s line-up will be soon equipped with this gearbox. This confirmation was given by Tim Leverton, President and Head-Advanced and Product Engineering in an interview to The BusinessLine.
The diesel variant of the Tata Zest will be equipped with the AMT gearbox. This transmission will be carried over to the petrol trim and other cars from the company’s portfolio later. The gear box has been developed considering the feedback received from customers about their demands. It will also make its way into the Tata Nano.
The Tata Nano Twist displayed at the Auto Expo had an F-Tronic five-speed AMT gearbox. This one has been supplied by Italian vendor Magneti Marelli. This vehicle is equipped with a electro-hydraulic mechanism that uses an electronic control unit and a hydraulic system to supervise clutch usage and gear shifting. Leverton also said that the AMT would be a single clutch with a hydraulic actuator.
Maruti Suzuki recently launched the Celerio with the automated-manual gearbox. With the introduction of these transmission options in which consumers can drive the car in a fully automatic mode or manually shift whenever they feel like, only time will tell if the demand for this car will increase or not. We are glad manufacturers are considering different options and look forward to seeing these in more vehicles.
