The Tata Bolt has been launched in the Indian market for Rs 4.44 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It is available in eight variants and with one diesel and petrol engine. The hatchback along with its CS sibling, the Zest, was unveiled just before the 2014 Auto Expo and are the first two cars in the Mumbai-based automaker’s HorizonNext Programme. We have already driven the car and you can find links to our road test and video review at the bottom of the story.
The Bolt like its sedan sibling is underpinned by an enhanced version of Tata’s X1 platform, which is used in the Manza and Vista. The car has been styled with inputs from Tata’s design studios in Pune, Coventry in the UK and Turin in Italy.
The top-spec XT diesel and petrol variants get dual airbags, ABS with EBD, climate control, rear parking sensors, all four power windows, electrically adjustable OVRMs, projector head lamps and a two-din music system with Bluetooth+AUX+iPOD compatibility and six speakers.
The Tata Bolt is available with both a petrol and diesel engine. The former is the 1.2-litre Revotron mill that produces 90bhp of power and 140Nm of torque. It features three driving modes - Sport, City and Eco that modulate the ECU maps for performance and efficiency.
The diesel is a 1.3-litre Quadrajet mill that churns out 75bhp of power and 190Nm of torque. We can expect the diesel AMT to arrive at a later date, but at the time of the launch only the five-speed manual gearbox is being offered on both the petrol and diesel models.
The Tata Bolt rivals the Hyundai Grand i10, Maruti Suzuki Swift and the Ford Figo. Bookings for hatchback began on December 22 and we expect that the first few owners will get their machines by the end of next week.
