- Sportier Altroz on sale
- Available only as a manual
Tata Motors launched the Altroz Racer with a more powerful engine, additional features, and cosmetic changes. It gets the 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine we've seen on the Nexon. The latter even gets a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA) transmission. However, the Altroz Racer only gets the six-speed manual. Here's why we think the racier version of the hatchback should also get the automatic gearbox.
Convenience and safety
The introduction of the DCA will bring in clutch-less shifts and eliminate the efforts the driver has to put in with his left leg. Also, with no gear changes and both hands on the steering, the driver can focus better on driving.
Will eliminate negatives
Though the Altroz Racer gets a new clutch with faster action at the pedal, the notchy gear shifts continue. The automatic transmission will eliminate this one big drawback of the car.
Availability
Since, the seven-speed automatic gearbox is already available with the Nexon, sourcing it for the Altroz shouldn't be difficult for the carmaker. Also, the Altroz Racer has successfully borrowed the Nexon's powertrain and further incorporating this DCA wouldn’t be a big challenge.
Premium offering
The Altroz is a premium hatchback and not an entry-level car. Buyers in this segment who shell out more than Rs. 10 lakh also look for ease of mind. So smooth gearshifts through this DCA will help apart from the added convenience. Catering to the enthusiasts is understood, but serving the demands of such buyers also becomes crucial.
Will undercut competition
That also brings us to the Altroz Racer's rival — the Hyundai i20 N Line. This car offers both manual and automatic gearbox options. Currently, the Altroz undercuts it in terms of pricing and if the automatic can continue to do that, it wouldn't be difficult to rope in more buyers for the Altroz Racer automatic. A win-win situation for the automaker.
