Last year, Suzuki Motor Corp. announced a major investment in its first wholly-owned car plant in India. The Suzuki Motor Gujarat Private Limited (SMG), a subsidiary of Suzuki, has now completed the construction of the manufacturing facility in Hansalpur, Gujarat. The facility will commence production of vehicles from February 1.
Established in 2014, SMG is Suzuki’s first 100 per cent investment for automobile production company in India. The Gujarat facility will be recognised as an export hub for the Japanese manufacturer. The vehicles produced here will be exported to markets in Europe, Africa, and Japan. According to Suzuki, by recognising it as a different manufacturing company from Maruti Suzuki, the company aims to enhance productivity and quality of Suzuki automobiles through their mutual thriving and challenging.
At first, the Baleno hatchback will be produced in Gujarat for sales through Nexa in India. Gradually the production will be increased depending upon the market demands. The plant will have an initial production capacity of 250,000 vehicles a year. Once the production starts in Gujarat, it would help Maruti Suzuki bring down the waiting period of the Baleno.
There are also plans to construct a second plant in Gujarat, along with engine and transmission plant, which are scheduled for operation in 2019. Upon the completion of it, Suzuki’s aims a production ability in India to reach a whopping 2 million units.
