A test mule of the JDM-spec Suzuki Wagon R has been spotted testing in India. At first instance it looks like it is headed straight to the Maruti showrooms to replace the existing Wagon R. But now it seems like the vehicle is undergoing component testing, as this is not the first time it was spotted in India.
The last sighting of the JDM Wagon R without camouflage was in July 2013. However the car spotted this time, wears an additional badge ‘Idling Stop’ indicating it has the start-stop technology. And, Indian traffic conditions serve as an ideal test bed for a car using this technology.
The changes in the JDM-spec Wagon R are clearly evident from the front fascia and the interiors that are completely different from that of the Indian car. It gets ‘bench-like’ front seats and the gearbox has been mounted on the dashboard. The rear end is also dissimilar with different taillights and an integrated brake light above the rear windscreen.
Prima facie it seems like the car is undergoing component testing, but the possibility of the car getting launched here cannot be ruled out either. The Indian-spec Wagon R got a facelift in 2013 and also got another model later in the same year, named Stingray, which is marketed independent of the Wagon R moniker. If at all Maruti decides to launch the car here, it might happen in 2015 and might even change the name of the car for India.
