Suzuki has announced that it managed to sells around three million examples of the Swift hatchback since it was launched in 2004. Not so surprisingly, Maruti, who is Suzuki’s largest venture outside of Japan, has managed to comprise 45 per cent (1.35 million) of this number. The Swift was launched for the Indian market in 2005 and was a run-away success for the Indo-Japanese automaker.
The other major contributors to making the numbers includes, Japan at 13 per cent and Europe at 23 per cent. Besides selling successfully, the Swift hatchback has also won many awards including the Automotive Researchers' and Journalists' Conference of Japan Car of the Year in 2006 and 2011, 2005-2006 Japan Car of the Year Special Award 'Most Fun' prize as well as prizes in India and Europe.
The car is produced in over 10 countries and assembled in around five. For the Indian market it spawned a sedan called Dzire. The Swift was refreshed globally in 2010 and this model was introduced into the Indian market in 2011.
