Suzuki has launched the crossover S-Cross in China with a starting price of 109.800 yuan (Rs 11.18 lakh). The S-cross is made in china by Chang’-an-Suzuki joint venture and is the second generation of the vehicle to be launched in the Chinese market.
The China spec S-cross gets a 1.6-litre VVT petrol engine which churns out 120bhp and 158Nm, mated to either a five-speed manual transmission or a CVT; it can be ordered in FWD or AWD. The S-cross will go head-on with some popular crossovers and the Nissan Qashqai which has been quite successful in the Chinese market. The S-Cross is an important product for Suzuki in China; who are looking to make a mark in the Chinese market. At present they have only three best-sellers in the form of Alto, Swift and SX-4.
India will get the S-Cross next year and it will be unveiled at the Auto Expo 2014. The S-Cross might get the same 1.6-litre VVT engine that powers the SX4 and an in-house developed diesel motor when it goes on sale. It will compete against the Nissan Terrano, Renault Duster and the Ford EcoSport in India.
Its dimensions are impressive it is just 4.3 metre long, 1.76 metres wide and 1.58 metres tall, with a wheelbase of 2.6 metres. This makes it as long as the Duster and Terrano and longer than the EcoSport which is the smallest in class, however the Duster and its cousin are taller and the EcoSport is the tallest in the class.
The S-Cross however has a lot going for it, backed by Maruti’s nation-wide sales support and easy availability of spares will make it a strong contender in the segment. However the talking point will be when Suzuki plonk in their home-bred oil-burner under the hood of this crossover. We shall wait until we get the S-cross in India to give you all the details.
