Suzuki has sold about four million units of its supermini, the Swift. Introduced in 2004, as the company’s global strategic model, the Swift has taken about nine years and nine months to complete this milestone.
The Swift hatchback was first made and sold in Japan and in 2005, production and distribution began in Hungary, India and China. It got a facelift in 2010, and in March 2012, production and distribution also began in Thailand.
The Swift has been the best-seller in the Indian market ever since its launch in 2005. The number of four million wouldn’t have been easy to achieve without the Indian market as about half that sales are from here. Significantly, about 19 per cent were sold in the European market and 11 per cent were sold in Japan.
Currently, the Swift is sold in 140 countries and is made in eight countries worldwide. It is truly one global car and the most important product for Maruti, in India, as of now. The Swift is available in petrol and diesel variant and also as a compact sedan in India.
