Suzuki Gujarat will be producing battery cells for the electric vehicle (EV). The company states that this will be needed if it wants 40 per cent of new car sales to be EVs. Local manufacturing of battery cells will be important to keep the make in India going. The company will depend on countries like Latin America which is rich in raw material resources needed to make the cells.
Maruti stated that the affordability of cars and EV infrastructure will be a priority. While emphasising on affordability, the company highlights that unlike internal combustion engine cars, small EVs aren't that much cheaper to make compared to the large EVs. Currently, the plans are in the initial stage of development and more details regarding the same will be known in the days to come.
To understand what sort of small car related charging infrastructure will be needed, Maruti Suzuki has commissioned a market survey - which will start in two weeks and will last for six weeks.
