We had earlier reported that Suzuki was developing some diesel engines in the range of 0.8-litres to 1.6-litres to power a variety of vehicles that it will launch over the next few years. The Indo-Japanese automaker currently uses the Fiat sourced 1.3-litre Multijet diesel to power its entire fleet of oil burners.
We already know that the smaller engine will be a 0.8-litre which is first expected to be fitted to a commercial vehicle along the lines of the Tata Ace. It is expected to be then fitted into the new India spec A-Star and eventually the Wagon R. The largest engine is expected to be created by combining two 800cc units to form 1.6-litres but this is expected to be reduced to 1.5-litre to comply with the Centre’s criteria for tax concession on diesel cars.
The engine is expected to debut with a compact SUV which is expected to be unveiled sometime next year and will be launched in 2016. Our guess is that the car will be either XA-Alpha or the production version of the iv-4 concept compact SUV.
