- Tenth generation expected to arrive by 2027
- Could spawn a small EV
The tenth-generation Maruti Alto is expected to arrive by 2027 and will be 100kg lighter than the outgoing model. The current-gen Japanese-spec car, which is Kei size, weighs 680kg. A 100kg weight loss would bring it to 578kg, putting it much closer to the original Suzulight that came along in the early 1970s. In fact, this weight would make it even lighter than the SS80 Maruti 800 that came along to being the Indo-Japanese automaker’s innings in 1983.
The bigger aim of this weight loss is expected to be the introduction of smaller and more efficient engines, the likes of which are already visible in the Z12 engine that has debuted with the new Swift. This engine will find its way to cars like the new Dzire, Wagon R, Baleno, and Fronx.
Our belief is also that a lighter car would allow the automaker to install bigger battery packs without incurring a weight penalty when making small EVs and hybrids. This is also expected to benefit CNG models with bigger tanks.
